Balloons Elizabeth Bibesco 9781444410136 Books Reviews
Elizabeth Bibesco's second book of short stories includes a few that can be still read with pleasure and more that open a window on the angst felt by women of a certain class in England who were still dealing with the loss of so many of their male friends in the World War. They (the characters in the stories) wear their emotions on their sleeves as they search for love and find nothing but loss. Elizabeth Bibesco was the daughter of the wartime prime minister, Herbert Henry Asquith and her circle - male friends and relatives - would have been the leaders of the future England, had they survived. That being said, the best stories in this book are really just anecdotes - the poignant "Fido and Ponto", about the passing of family pets, the story of the loss of a fur coat in a fire, the story of springtime balloons in Paris (a story of loss in its own way). A contemporary review stated that these tales could have been the subject matter of short stories by Katherine Mansfield or novels by Henry James - placing Elizabeth Bibesco, one of the "legion of the lost" just one step behind the pantheon of British literature in the early part of the century.
Other than the price one pays for this binding (which in itself is remarkably done), this book reads as searing and yet as smooth as one might expect, as one who has come to adore Bibesco. She is wit, raw edginess and human emotive in one pristine hardcover.
An unusual set of short pieces from the world of the social elite of the turn of the twentieth century, adding some perspective.
